Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

Hainau 1751 - Eutin 1829

Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, who painted the famous picture "Johann Wolfgang Goethe in der Campagna", also known as "Goethe-Tischbein", was born on February 15, 1751 in Haina. He received his training as an artist under his uncle Johann Jacob Tischbein.
In 1779, like many of his other colleagues, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein went to Rome. In the landscapes, historical pieces and still lives he painted in Rome he abandoned the Rococo style in favor of Classicism. During his second sojourn to Rome from 1783 to 1799 he met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1786 and then traveled to Naples with him in 1787. Also that year, he painted his famous picture of Goethe.
From 1808 Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein worked at the court of the Duke of Oldenburg.
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein died on February 26, 1829 in Eutin.
